If you (and half the country) have decided to start the new year off eating healthy and exercising, then look no further as IPM Lancaster have put together a list of the best places in Lancaster to exercise and start the new year off healthy!
Lancaster University/Uni of Cumbria Gym
Whilst Lancaster may only be a small city, there are still lots of places both indoors and outdoors to start off or continue your exercise journey. Students at Lancaster University and University of Cumbria have access to their respective universities’ gym at a discounted price. Lancaster Uni even offer different memberships based on what you can afford, which is perfect for our Lancaster students. Even the bronze membership which is the cheapest still includes use of the gym, pool and group fitness classes. Now we understand that as students you may not have loads of spare cash for a gym membership, but you still want to exercise, luckily for you, Lancaster University offer a pay as you go package at their gym, where you can just pay for sessions as and when you need/want too.
For all our students living in off-campus student accommodation in Lancaster town centre, you are only a short bus journey/walk away from both Universities fitness centres. However, if you prefer going outside as opposed to being in a gym/fitness class, Lancaster does have some beautiful spots that are perfect for walking/running around.
Choosing to exercise outdoors is not only good for your physical but also your mental health! So if you’re looking for cheap way to exercise, that also gets you outside in the fresh air and sunlight, then look no further.
Williamson Park is one of the most popular spots in Lancaster with both students and locals. It’s the perfect place to have a wander around as it has over 54 acres of beautiful park land and stunning views of the peak district. Whether you choose to exercise with your housemates or on your own, you’re sure to enjoy lovely views of the local area whilst you do so. Williamson Park also hosts a Park Run every single weekend, a free (perfect for our Lancaster students), fun, community 5k event that you can run, jog, walk or even just go up to watch! If you want to go, all you need to do is register online for free and turn up on the day.
Morecambe Bay promenade is also a great place to run/walk/skate, whatever you choose. Morecambe Bay has some of the best views for a seaside town, looking across the coastline to the beautiful lakeside mountains. A walk along the prom is a must for all Lancaster students, and for those of you living in town centre student accommodation, it’s only a short drive/bus journey away.
If you need a little extra motivation, Angel Club (north) have made a series of audio walks completely free for those who want to get involved, whether you just want to do a short 10 min walk or a long 3 hour walk, you can download the step-workout and musical journey motivational audio for completely free here.
Whether you decide to start 2024 hitting the gyms and exercising hard, or just make small healthier choices, we hope this blog has helped give you some inspiration! To keep up to date with all things Students, Lancaster living and student accommodation, visit the IPM Lancaster website for more.
